Welcome!

Welcome to the blog portion of my website! The purpose of this section is to keep you updated about my musical and educational endeavors. Check back to see updates and upcoming events!

First, I want to recap a couple of amazing opportunities I had in February so far. I spent a day at Gildersleeve Middle School in Newport News teaching horn sectionals and lessons and a trumpet sectional. It was a blast to be in the classroom again, and it was great to work with my friend and colleague from Virginia Tech, Robert Deis, and to see how well he is doing as a band director. The school and the kids were fantastic, and Robert is doing an outstanding job! Go GMS!!

Last week, I went to the Teachers' Expo at UVA to meet representatives from school districts across Virginia. It was a real treat to meet so many wonderful people invested in the education of future generations. I'm looking forward to seeing what might come of that experience!

So. . . what's next?

As I've mentioned elsewhere on my website, I am putting together a recital tour during April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The theme of my recital is "Trauma and Triumph," and I am performing works by female composers to tell my own story of being sexually assaulted when I was 13.

This project means a great deal to me, and it's empowering to work towards sharing my narrative through my primary expressive outlet: my horn. The events will focus on my own narrative as a means of advocating for survivors of sexual assault. Each survivor has a unique story to tell, and we deserve to be believed and supported.

The dates, times, and locations are listed below:

Sunday, April 10th, 2016

1:00 p.m., Squires Recital Salon

Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA

Saturday, April 23rd, 2016

2:00 p.m., Auer Hall

Indiana University, Bloomington, IN

I hope that those of you who are nearby can make it. I'm looking forward to sharing my story and sharing this fantastic music. More information to come as the event details are finalized.

In the meantime, here are some great resources if you are interested in learning more about sexual assault survival:

I'll leave you with a quote from one of my absolute favorite writers: Brené Brown.

"Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we'll ever do."
